Reflux Surgery (Fundoplication)
Gastric reflux surgery, most commonly performed as a Laparoscopic Fundoplication, is an effective surgical treatment for Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD). This procedure aims to relieve symptoms, reduce reliance on long-term medication, and improve overall quality of life for patients with persistent or severe reflux.
What Is Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)?
GORD occurs when stomach acid and, sometimes, bile flow back into the oesophagus, causing symptoms such as:
Burning chest pain or heartburn
Regurgitation of food or acid
Difficulty or painful swallowing (odynophagia)
Nocturnal reflux that disrupts sleep
Chronic cough, asthma, or hoarseness linked to acid exposure
While lifestyle changes and medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are usually the first line of treatment, surgery becomes an option when symptoms are not adequately controlled, or when patients wish to avoid the long-term use of medication.
What Is Fundoplication Surgery?
Fundoplication is a surgical technique that reinforces the valve between the oesophagus and the stomach. It involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach (called the fundus) around the lower oesophagus to prevent acid and food from flowing backward.
This strengthens the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), helping it close more effectively after food passes into the stomach, thereby reducing or eliminating reflux.
When Is Surgery Recommended?
Surgery may be considered if you:
Continue to experience reflux symptoms despite optimal medical therapy
Have complications such as oesophagitis, strictures, or Barrett’s oesophagus
Experience extra-oesophageal symptoms like chronic cough or asthma related to reflux
Prefer to manage your condition without long-term medication use
