    Initial Consultation

    First Appointment

At your first consultation with Dr Ian Baxter, the initial focus will be:

    • To learn more about your weight loss goals
    • To determine your suitability for different surgical procedures
    • To outline the advantages and disadvantages of all procedures for which you’re a suitable candidate
    • To make a recommendation on which procedure will be best for you
    • To discuss your expected outcomes from bariatric surgery

After your initial consultation with Dr Baxter, your Bariatric Nurse Educator will discuss your barium swallow and pathology, walk you through the process of applying for early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds (if applicable) and answer any questions you may have at this stage.

    Second and Third Appointments

If after your initial consultation you are ready to continue your surgical weight loss journey, you will be asked to attend the clinic to have consultations with our bariatric dietitian and bariatric psychologist. You will then have another appointment with Dr Baxter to answer any questions and sign your consent form. This process will help you to understand your nutritional needs and get into the right mindset to achieve long-lasting results. We know that getting it right the first time is our best chance of success and our experienced team will guide you through the journey.

    Before Surgery

Preparing for your medical weight loss procedure

The bariatric surgical process need not be confusing or scary. Once you’ve met the Sunshine Coast Medical Weight Loss Centre Team, had your blood test and barium swallow, we have received all your results and decided on which procedure you will be having, your surgery date will be set and pre-operative appointments arranged.

At all times through this phase and beyond, if you have any questions or concerns simply get in touch with the Centre. Dr Ian Baxter and our experienced team are with you every step of the way.

    Your pre-op appointments will include;

    • a bariatric consultation to review the paperwork, have an opportunity to ask further questions face-to-face, receive your bariatric pack and schedule your post-op appointments
    • seeing your dietitian again, usually 2-3 weeks prior to the procedure, to discuss your pre-surgery diet
    • an appointment with Dr Baxter to answer any questions and sign your consent form.

If you are a smoker, it is highly recommended for you to stop smoking prior to bariatric surgery (and preferably forever) to reduce the risk of any complications. If you’d like to better understand these risks, simply contact one of our team members.

    The fortnight prior to surgery

    Your bariatric surgery pre-op diet

You will be required to commence a very low energy diet (VLED) 7-14 days prior to surgery, which has two main benefits:

    1. It will help to trigger your body to begin to lose weight, by causing it to go into a state of mild ketosis, which means switching from using carbohydrates as the main energy source to burning fats instead.
    2. More importantly, it reduces the size of your liver (to enable Dr Baxter better access to your stomach during your surgery) and prepares you to create healthier eating habits post-op.

Your bariatric dietitian will inform you of the duration of your individualised VLED diet prior to your commencement.

As a total meal replacement program, the Formulite® VLED diet also provides all the vitamins and minerals your body needs – improving your nutrition before surgery.

    The night before

    Time to fast
Bariatric surgery patients need to fast from midnight on the night before surgery. While some medication can be taken the morning of surgery, make sure you check with Dr Baxter which medications need to be ceased one week prior to surgery to help prevent complications.

    Payment

Payment is required prior to surgery.
Our friendly team will take you through the payment process. If accessing your superannuation, it will be imperative that your application is submitted in plenty of time for approval. This can take up to four weeks.

    Day of Surgery

    Prior to your admission

Ensuring your bariatric surgery can proceed on schedule

Having already confirmed your admission time and fasting time prior to the day of your surgery, it is important to follow these instructions on the day of your surgery:

    • Shower as normal, however do not use any powders, perfumes, deodorants or creams on the skin.
    • Wear clean comfortable clothes — you will be changed into a hospital gown for theatre and then change back into your own clothes to go home.
    • Bring only a small bag to admissions, with medications/scripts, scans and paperwork.
    • After you present to the main hospital desk for admission:
    • You’ll be directed to the day of surgery admissions (DOSA) and prepped for operation
    • You’ll be greeted by Dr Ian Baxter and the anaesthetist, then taken into the operating theatre
    • Dr Baxter will chat to you further and help calm any nerves before the general anaesthesia puts you in a sleep-like state for your procedure to commence.

Before you know it, you’ll awake post-op.

The hospital staff will notify your next of kin when you are in recovery and when they can come visit you.

Bariatric surgery takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes to complete. In most cases you will spend two nights (three days) in hospital, during which you’ll commence a liquid diet. The nursing staff will assist you with your medications, pain relief and intravenous fluids.

Prior to discharging, you’ll receive a visit from Dr Baxter and one of the Sunshine Coast Medical Weight Loss Centre’s dietitians where you’ll be able to ask any questions you have.

Rest assured that once you go home, you won’t be going it alone. Sunshine Coast Medical Weight Loss Centre’s specialist New Beginnings aftercare package provides all the guidance and support you need every step of the way for the months and years ahead.

    timeline

    Post-Op Appointments

    Week of Surgery

    Post-Op Call

The team will do a post-operative phone call with the patient to ensure they are travelling well and to answer any questions or concerns they may have coming into the weekend.

    1 WEEK AFTER

    Surgeon Assessment

You’ll have a post-operative appointment with Dr Baxter to review your wounds and overall recovery. For patients who need to travel, this appointment can also be completed via telehealth.

    3 WEEKS AFTER

    Dietitian – Soft Food

Appointment with the Dietitian where they will prepare the patient for the soft stage.

    8 WEEKS AFTER

    Dietitian – Full Food

Appointment with the Dietitian where they will prepare the patient to move to full food.

    3 MONTHS AFTER

    Surgeon & Dietitian Appointment

Appointment with both the Dietitian and Dr Baxter to assess their weight loss and how they are travelling.

    6 MONTHS AFTER

    Psychologist Assessment + Blood Test

Appointment with Psychologist and Dietitian. This is a very important appointment where the team organise full bloods to be taken prior to. The dietitian will assess their blood levels to make sure they are not lacking anything and that they are getting in enough protein and having a healthy relationship with food. The psychologist will meet up with the patient at 6 months, as this appears to be the time when patients experience “the head games”.

    12 MONTHS AFTER

    Continued Care

Dr Baxter or the Bariatric Navigator will follow up with the patient and organise full bloods to ensure they are not malnourished.

Maintenance of physical activity post bariatric–metabolic surgery aids in maintaining muscle strength, enhanced fitness and greater weight loss. Moderate-intensity physical activity of at least 150 minutes per week and a future target of 300 minutes per week (including strength training) two to three times per week is recommended.
