Considering Bariatric Surgery? Here’s What You Need to Know About Costs and Support

For many people exploring gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery, the first hurdle isn’t fear of the procedure itself – it’s cost. If you’ve found yourself Googling how much does bariatric surgery cost in Australia? or quietly wondering whether it’s even an option for you, you’re not alone.

Bariatric surgery is a life-changing decision. But like most life-changing decisions, it comes with complexity, especially during the contemplative phase, where the emotional, physical, and financial aspects all weigh heavily.

At Sunshine Coast Medical Weight Loss Centre, we understand that cost is often the biggest unknown, and we’re here to help you navigate it.

Understanding the Real Cost of Surgery

It’s important to understand that surgery is just one part of a much bigger process. The price you pay isn’t just for time in theatre. It includes a multidisciplinary team who walk with you every step of the way.

At our centre, the support package includes:

  • Pre- and post-operative support from a dietitian (up to five sessions)
  • Access to an experienced psychologist before and after surgery
  • Ongoing education on eating well with a smaller stomach
  • Behavioural support to address emotional and habitual eating

This team-based care model is part of our proven approach, and the combined cost of consultation and support typically ranges from $5,000 to $7,000, depending on your personalised plan and procedure type.

Hospital Fees: The Largest Component

The largest portion of bariatric surgery expenses comes from hospital costs. We perform most of our procedures at Buderim Private Hospital and Sunshine Coast Private Hospital, which both offer tailored pre- and post-operative care aligned with our approach.

At the time of writing, hospital fees at Buderim are approximately $14,500, making it one of the more affordable private care options in Queensland. Other private hospitals may range up to $20,000.

Can You Use Superannuation to Fund Surgery?

Yes, in many cases, patients can access their super through the ATO’s Early Release of Superannuation scheme. Our team supports you through this process and handles the necessary paperwork.

To be eligible, you’ll typically need to show that:

  • The surgery is medically necessary
  • You have a referral from your GP or surgeon
  • You meet the compassionate grounds criteria under ATO guidelines

Some patients choose to:

  • Join a private health fund and wait the required 12 months for coverage
  • Use an existing fund that already includes bariatric surgery
  • Or self-fund using superannuation or personal savings

We’ll walk you through each option during your initial consultation so you understand what’s right for your situation.

You’re Not Alone, and You Won’t Be Judged

Obesity is a medical condition, not a personal failure. At our centre, we offer a compassionate, non-judgemental environment where your long-term success is our priority. What sets us apart is our holistic approach. We don’t just focus on the surgery itself. We also help you address the root causes of weight gain, including emotional eating and mindset.

This wraparound care continues well beyond the procedure through our New Beginnings Program, giving you access to ongoing support, education, and guidance throughout your journey.

We believe that every patient deserves:

  • Tailored, evidence-based care
  • Emotional and behavioural support
  • A clear path to sustained results

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included in the hospital fee?

The hospital fee generally includes operating theatre costs, hospital stay, anaesthetist fees, and nursing care. It may also cover some post-operative care depending on your provider.

Does Medicare cover any part of bariatric surgery?

Medicare does not typically cover the full cost of weight loss surgery in a private hospital. However, some pre-operative tests or appointments may attract a rebate. We’ll go over all available Medicare rebates during your consultation.
