To apply for Super

You may be able to access your superannuation funds early for essential, life-changing surgery under guidelines set by the Australian Tax Office (ATO), particularly for conditions like life-threatening illness, chronic pain, or chronic mental illness. However, approval is not guaranteed, and it’s important to consider the financial implications. Please note we cannot provide financial advice.

Before you apply, please check with your super provider to confirm they allow the early release of super. If you have a self-managed super fund, ATO approval is still required to access your super early.

Please note the following:

  1. Surgery Cancellation: If you decide not to proceed with your surgery after applying to the ATO through Dr. Baxter’s rooms, we have an obligation to notify the ATO.
  2. Unforeseen Circumstances: Like any medical procedure, unforeseen circumstances during your surgery may necessitate additional medical services or the use of a different, potentially more expensive prosthetic device. In such cases, there may be additional costs that are not covered by the initial estimate.
  3. Tax Implications: Please be aware that applying for the early release of your superannuation will be considered as income at the end of the tax year. This may impact your tax return as well as any Childcare Subsidy (CCS) or pension payments you receive.
  4. Amount Needed: Ensure you have enough funds to cover the surgery, remembering to access an extra 22% for tax.
  5. Simplified Process: We understand that applying for super release can be confusing. An alternative solution is SuperCare, a company that offers a more streamlined approach by handling your application with the ATO on your behalf. This service is generally quicker, though a processing fee is applicable. The SuperCare option is available for medical treatment, surgery, and pre- and post-operative costs for you or your immediate family. SuperCare operates on a no approval – no fee basis, so if your application is declined by the ATO and the decision cannot be overturned, the service fee is fully refunded. SuperCare provides a dedicated Case Managed Consultant to assist you every step of the way. Talk to their friendly customer care team on 1300 665 440 and discuss your situation today.
