Dr Ian Baxter

Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Surgeon

One of Queensland’s most experienced bariatric surgeons, Doctor Baxter is an Australian-trained general surgeon with extensive expertise in bariatric (weight loss), upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic hernia surgery.

A Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons since 1995, Dr Baxter pioneered bariatric surgery on the Sunshine Coast and has performed more 4,000 procedures locally since 1998.

He has been a trusted Member of the Medical Advisory Committee at the Buderim Private Hospital; the Surgical Services Committee at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital; and the Medical Advisory Committee at Kawana Private Hospital; as well as contributing to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ Younger Fellow Committee.

After graduating from Medicine at The University of Queensland in the 1980s, Dr Baxter completed his surgical training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital where he remained for nine years. His post-Fellowship training in upper gastrointestinal surgery was undertaken in the United Kingdom, before returning to Queensland in 1997 as Director of Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Brisbane.

Relocating to the Sunshine Coast in 1998 was a dream come true for Dr Baxter, his wife and four daughters. When not working as one of the Sunshine Coast’s top bariatric surgeons, he enjoys caring for his horses, gardening, going to the beach, surfing, playing music and spending time with family.
